Aurora Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to the Aurora web application, Aurora mobile application, the Aurora Community Portal and the Aurora Academy.

These services are run by Symology Limited. We want as many people as possible to be able to use them, and accessibility is taken into consideration during development. We have established an ongoing project to ensure these services conform with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards, and are targeting to achieve and maintain at least Level AA compliance.

Aurora web application

The Aurora web application is an expert system, requiring spatial map based activities and varied controls for efficient management of dense information. It is designed to be used with a keyboard, a mouse or similar pointer device, and a typical display monitor.

  • Black text and white backgrounds are predominant.
  • Use of colour predominantly meets accessibility standards for colour contrast. We are actively resolving remaining exceptions.
  • Browser zoom controls can be used to adjust font size, in most cases you can zoom up to at least 200%. We are actively resolving any exceptions.
  • Screen Reader optimisations are being established.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are available for many key actions.

Aurora mobile application

The Aurora mobile application has a touch based interface, has a map and text based user experience which follows the Material design methodology.

  • Black text and white backgrounds are predominant.
  • Use of colour predominantly meets accessibility standards for colour contrast.
  • A wide range of mobile phone and tablet devices can be used, in both landscape and portrait modes. The application detects and utilizes screen capabilities and formats the interface accordingly.

We are yet to incorporate the mobile application into our accessibility project, however we have designed the application with this in mind for the future.

Aurora Community Portal and Academy

These supporting websites provide news, a knowledge base, and e-learning resources for Aurora customers. These are designed using clear interfaces suitable for screen reading.

  • Black text and white backgrounds are predominant.
  • Use of colour predominantly meets accessibility standards for colour contrast.
  • E-Learning materials are predominantly video based, and include playback speed controls and captions/subtitles throughout.

We have started to check and resolve exceptions to ensure the Portal and Academy are fully compliant to the AA level.

Public Web Portals

Our View It, Report It and Apply For It public web portals are customised websites which interact with Aurora data to gather and/or share information with the public and other interested parties. Typically, the design is branded to match customer requirements, integrating with their own corporate identity. This includes branding, website design and any compliance requirements, including accessibility.

We have incorporated accessibility optimisation for customers, and would address each customer unique requirements in partnership with them. Accessibility features would include:

  • Browser zoom controls can be used to adjust font size, in most cases to at least 200%.
  • Text and forms are shown in considered, corporate colour schemes

Accessibility limitations

As an expert system with dense, detailed visual elements, it may not be viable to achieve Level AAA compliance, however we are progressing well with our work and will proceed to this level where possible.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Symology Limited is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

We are currently using the WAVE evaluation tool to identify and focus on specific issues we wish to address.

We support the use of screen readers, and are in progress with changes to make the most of these tools. We are evaluating use of the NVDA Screen Reader to test the customer experience for this and similar products.

Compliance status

We have established an ongoing project to ensure compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 to a Level of AA standard. We will use this page to publish a list of non-compliances and/or exemptions once we have completed a full review.

This statement was prepared on 7th March 2023. It was last reviewed on 17th December 2024. We shall update this statement at least once per annum.
